I'm hearing that the Arizona immigration law that that would require non-citizens to carry proof of legal residency and require officers to check immigration status under "reasonable suspicion" has been partially blocked.
Which reminds me, when I lived in Japan, I was required to carry an "alien card" outside of the house, and also that last November a police officer checked my passport for no reason whatsoever in Narita International Airport (in Tokyo).
There are so few foreigners trying to move permanently to Japan that protests about such matters rarely reach critical mass.
