So, was able to embed a zoho.com excel-style worksheet into a web page. It's live and you can edit and make calculations on the fly. Neat, but mostly a novelty.

Some difficulty negotiating my health insurance providers phone menu today. Didn't like the way I said, "Yes" and promptly hung up. Then it took my birth year to be 1916...
Maybe I need to work on my pronunciation.
I felt that an elderly person would have a tough time being able to read the phone number on the back of the card or negotiate this voice-activated menu. If the system doesn't understand right away, users should be transfered straight to an operator. Don't you?

What does "The CW" stand for. Meaning the TV network.
C=CBS
W=Warner Bros.
I guess they were looking for something free of any history. Certainly not a three-letter name.

I'm hearing that the Arizona immigration law that that would require non-citizens to carry proof of legal residency and require officers to check immigration status under "reasonable suspicion" has been partially blocked.
Which reminds me, when I lived in Japan, I was required to carry an "alien card" outside of the house, and also that last November a police officer checked my passport for no reason whatsoever in Narita International Airport (in Tokyo).
There are so few foreigners trying to move permanently to Japan that protests about such matters rarely reach critical mass.

Yesterday I moved from one studio to another for a violin lesson. During one that hour that I paid attention to the student and didn't use my violin, my bow tightened up (change of humidity / temperature) quite a bit. When I noticed it I jumped up and gently loosened it.
Everybody keep an eye on these things in air-conditioned buildings!

Saw Ponyo last night. Another Hayao Miyazawa animated film about maintaining the balance of nature. This one is clearly geared towards the 3-6 year old set, but is still fun for adults. Ponyo is a baby fish with a human face, who comes out of the sea and makes a close relationship with a human boy...Well, you have to watch it to get it!

Daniel Shorr passed away yesterday at the age of 93. I have been listening to his news analysis segments on NPR since..maybe I was five years old or so. His voice went from slightly husky to somewhat husky, but seemed like his reporting was a permanent part of this universe.
NPR ran a ton of clips from interviews with him in his memory today, and there were all kinds of charming anecdotes.
He certainly was from another age--Somebody who was very up front about his journists code of ethics. Not a lot of that going on these battle-of-the-sensational-news times.

One of my students was telling me that an old coworker of his brought him a souvenir from Japan. It's chili oil called "rayu", for putting in sauce for dumplings and things like that. Well, this brand of oil is super popular in Japan, and has a great name: "Karasoude Karakunai Chotto Karai Ra-yu", which means something like, "looks spicy, not really spicy, but is kind of a little bit spicy chili oil". Apparently some bloggers over there spread the news about the product and now its selling for a huge premium and flys off the shelves anyway. Such are Japanese trends..

Today I signed up for an ersatz domain name through http://dot.tk
Apparently folks with websites with long urls (free hosts or blog hosts) can register for free a domain name ending in .tk
So instead of http://free-web-host.com/freepages/johnp/blog.html, you could use http://johnp.tk or similar.
Seems that .tk is not an official domain suffix, and I'm wondering how they are pulling this off.
Anyway, a curious / vagely useful website that I ran across.
